Commercial disclosure: Refer & Save may earn commission when readers use clearly identified affiliate links and make a qualifying purchase. This guide contains no live codes, prices, rates or deal claims. Every merchant-specific offer must be checked against the provider’s current official terms before publication or use.
Summary: A referral code usually credits an existing customer for introducing a new one. A promo or voucher code is normally a business-led promotion. An affiliate link or code tracks a publisher’s commercial referral. None of these labels guarantees a saving. The provider’s current terms, checkout total and order confirmation determine what you receive, whether you qualify and when a reward is due.
Codes help only where conditions suit a purchase you already intend to make. An offer can be restricted by customer status, product, minimum spend, UK storefront, payment method or period. A referral reward can depend on both parties’ qualifying actions and remain pending through delivery, payment clearance or returns. Verify first; do not buy more merely to chase a reward.
This is a practical, general guide rather than personal legal, financial or consumer-rights advice. It deliberately does not name a current offer or imply that any code will work today.
Referral, invite, promo, voucher and affiliate codes: the difference
The first useful check is to identify the relationship behind the code. A customer referral, a retailer promotion and a publisher’s affiliate tracking can all look like a short code or a clickable link, but they have different purposes and conditions.
| Term | Meaning | Who usually provides it? | What it may do | First thing to verify |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Referral code | An identifier that credits an existing customer for introducing someone new. | A friend, family member or another customer. | May reward the invited person, referrer or both once rules are met. | Definition of “new customer”, qualifying action and reward timing. |
| Invite code / invite link | The code, URL or QR route used to record a referral. | An existing customer or the provider’s official sharing tool. | May attach the referrer automatically during sign-up. | That it leads to the genuine provider and the referral is recorded. |
| Promo code | A business-issued code for a campaign, audience or checkout. | The retailer, brand, app or an authorised partner. | May give a discount, gift, delivery benefit or another stated incentive. | Expiry, minimum spend, exclusions and single-use limits. |
| Voucher code | A broad label for a discount, credit, gift voucher or campaign benefit. | A retailer or voucher issuer. | May operate like a promo code or represent stored value. | Whether it is a discount or stored value, plus expiry and redemption rules. |
| Affiliate code or link | Commercial tracking used by a publisher, creator or comparison site. | An affiliate publisher or partner. | May attribute a sale to the publisher and sometimes gives a shopper benefit. | Clear advertising disclosure and the provider’s actual offer terms. |
A discount code is a broad consumer label, not a description of a specific programme. It may mean a welcome, student, voucher, promo or affiliate code. “Referral” describes an introduction between people. “Affiliate” describes a commercial arrangement between a publisher and a merchant. A single campaign can use both, so the terms—not the label—matter.
How the routes normally work
A customer referral programme commonly follows a sequence: an existing customer shares an invite; the invited person creates an account; that person completes the stated qualifying action; and the provider decides whether a reward is due. The action could be a first paid order, subscription payment, delivered order or approved application. It is not safe to assume that registration alone counts.
Restrictions can include prior accounts, trials, duplicate accounts, shared households, refunds and cancellations. A programme may require the code at sign-up, and can change under its terms. Use one truthful account and retain route evidence.
A promo code normally changes the basket at checkout. It might reduce the item price, add a gift or change delivery cost. If the final payable total does not change, do not assume you have received a saving. The terms may instead describe a later credit, points or a separate benefit.
Affiliate tracking can bring a shopper to the same checkout while recording that a publisher sent them there. The publisher may receive commission if a sale qualifies, but that does not alter the shopper’s entitlement unless an offer expressly says so. UK advertising guidance requires marketing communications to be obviously identifiable, and says extra disclosure may be needed where affiliate content would otherwise look like independent editorial content. 2
The eight-point verification workflow
Start with the provider’s official promotion page, programme terms and checkout—not a screenshot, search snippet or social-media post. Significant promotion conditions should be clear and upfront. ASA guidance identifies participation method, closing date, proof-of-purchase requirements, eligibility restrictions and availability limits as information that may be significant. 1
| Check | What to establish | Questions to answer | Evidence to retain |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1. Official source | The genuine provider page, terms and checkout. | Is the domain, verified app or account authentic? Does the provider describe the same offer? | URL, date and a screenshot or saved copy of terms. |
| 2. Eligibility | Who may participate. | Is it new customers only? Do prior accounts, household members, age, location, staff status or payment method matter? | Eligibility wording and relevant account history. |
| 3. Qualifying action | The precise event that earns the benefit. | Is sign-up enough, or must you verify, buy, receive delivery or remain subscribed? | Terms, order reference and confirmation email. |
| 4. Benefit | What is awarded and to whom. | Is it a checkout saving, credit, gift, points or later reward? Is it fixed, conditional or capped? | Offer page and checkout total. |
| 5. Expiry and availability | Campaign period and redemption deadline. | Does the code expire? Is the offer limited by stock, redemptions or reward allocation? | Dated record of the relevant clause. |
| 6. Caps and exclusions | Spend, order, product and account restrictions. | Are sale items, delivery, gift cards, subscriptions or regulated products excluded? Is there a per-person or household cap? | Basket contents and exclusions. |
| 7. Stacking and route | Combination and journey rules. | Can it combine with sale pricing, loyalty credit, student pricing, cashback or another code? Must you use an invite link? | Checkout screen and programme instructions. |
| 8. Timing and reversals | Payment timing and events that undo a reward. | Is it instant, pending, post-delivery or after a returns window? What about refunds, chargebacks or fraud checks? | Reward-status screen and full terms. |
Read in this order: eligibility, qualifying action, benefit, time limit, exclusions, reversals. The least exciting clause is often decisive. A claimed reward that requires a first paid transaction from a genuinely new customer is not equivalent to a universal checkout discount.
Do not turn ambiguous words—such as “selected customers”, “up to”, “from”, “subject to approval” or “while available”—into a precise promise. Ask the provider through its official site or app and save its response. That response may clarify your case, but it might not override the written programme terms.
Compare the final checkout, not the headline
Before payment, compare the complete payable total with and without the code, including delivery, compulsory fees and future recurring payment. Confirm delivery, cancellation information and whether a trial or subscription is being created. An immediate discount may be more useful than a later referral reward; an automatic sale can displace an accepted code.
For online distance sales, UK government guidance says traders must give key pre-contract information, including price, delivery arrangements, contract and cancellation information. It also describes a 14-day cancellation period after delivery for many online orders, subject to important exceptions. 6 Apply that information to the specific purchase rather than assuming every product, digital service, travel booking, subscription or reward has identical cancellation rights.
Practical rule: If the code has not changed the final total, been acknowledged in the relevant account journey, or been confirmed as pending under the provider’s terms, treat it as not yet working. Do not submit duplicate orders to test it.
Checkout troubleshooting without risking your account
Duplicate accounts, orders or manipulated routes can invalidate a referral and create fraud flags. Troubleshoot once and use official support if needed.
| What you see | Probable reason | Safe next step |
|---|---|---|
| “Code invalid” | Typo, expiry, withdrawn campaign or wrong country/storefront. | Paste it once without spaces and compare it with current official terms. |
| “Already used” | Single-use code, existing account link or lost eligibility. | Check account and order history; do not make another account to bypass the limit. |
| Code accepted, but no price reduction | It may be a later credit, gift or tracking mechanism; a condition may be incomplete. | Read the benefit and timing clauses and save the acknowledgement screen. |
| Code field is missing | The offer may be automatic, invite-only or restricted to registration. | Follow the official promotion journey. Do not remove an existing accepted discount without comparing totals. |
| Sale price replaces the code | Only one promotion may apply, or sale items may be excluded. | Compare both final totals and use only a combination expressly permitted. |
| Reward is pending | Delivery, payment clearance, verification or a returns period may be outstanding. | Record the stated timetable and wait until it passes before escalating. |
| Support cannot locate referral | The invite may not have attached, or a qualifying step is missing. | Give official support the order reference, date, code/invite evidence and saved terms. |
Keep any support request factual: “I used this official invite on [date], completed order [reference], and the terms I saved say [condition]. Please confirm whether the referral is recorded and its expected status.” Never share a password, full card details or a one-time security code. A genuine support team does not need them to check a referral.
Scam safety: protect your money, data and login
An attractive code does not prove a transaction is safe. Scammers can copy branding, use fake delivery notices and add urgency to move shoppers onto imitation sites. The National Cyber Security Centre describes phishing as scam emails, texts or calls intended to trick people into visiting websites that may steal information or install malware. 4
| Red flag | Why it matters | Safer response |
|---|---|---|
| A message demands immediate payment or says a reward expires in minutes. | Urgency can prevent sensible checking. UK guidance also identifies false claims that an offer is ending soon as prohibited. 3 | Pause and find the provider independently through its app, typed URL or trusted search result. |
| A code requires a fee, bank transfer, password, security code or remote access. | A standard referral or promo code should not require sensitive credentials or payment to unlock it. | Stop and use only official provider channels. |
| The URL is misspelt, strange-looking, or arrives via an unexpected QR code or direct message. | Lookalike pages can capture payment and login details. | Do not use the link. Navigate independently and compare the genuine offer. |
| You are told to create multiple accounts or use another person’s identity. | This may breach the programme and expose you to fraud or account restrictions. | Decline and use one truthful account. |
| The page hides the seller, contact details, full price or material restrictions. | You cannot properly assess the transaction or seek help later. | Do not proceed until the trader and full conditions are clear. |
Use a unique password for important shopping accounts, enable multi-factor authentication where available and keep your browser and apps current. Enter a retailer’s address yourself rather than following an unexpected message. HTTPS and a padlock help protect the connection, but they do not prove that a website is legitimate.
If you have clicked a suspicious link, given away information or lost money, contact your bank or payment provider promptly. In the UK, forward suspicious emails to report@phishing.gov.uk and suspicious texts free to 7726. Scam or misleading adverts can be reported to the ASA. GOV.UK directs people in England and Wales who believe they have lost money or been hacked to Report Fraud; in Scotland, report the crime to Police Scotland. 5 Change a compromised password through the genuine site, especially if it was used elsewhere.
Refer & Save’s commercial and editorial standard
Commercial relationships should be clear before a reader acts. Refer & Save should label affiliate links in proximity to the relevant offer and distinguish affiliate tracking from a customer referral. It should not present a tracked link as a guaranteed saving.
Do not publish what has not been verified. Every live merchant listing should record the official terms URL, UK territory, check date, eligible audience, qualifying action, benefit type, expiry or availability rule, cap, exclusions, stacking rule and reward timetable. If any material condition cannot be confirmed, withhold the claim or mark it unavailable rather than guessing.
Frequently asked questions
Is a referral code the same as a promo code?
No. A referral code usually records an introduction by an existing customer and may reward one or both parties later. A promo code is normally a retailer’s marketing incentive at checkout. Their technology can overlap, so read the terms.
Can I use a referral code if I have bought from the brand before?
Only when current terms allow it. “New customer” can include rules about previous accounts, trials, payment methods, addresses or household members. Do not create a duplicate account to evade a restriction.
Can I stack a voucher, referral code, cashback and sale price?
Assume no unless the provider expressly permits it. A checkout may apply only one promotion, while cashback or referral tracking can require a particular route. Compare like-for-like final totals and preserve any evidence of the selected route.
Why has my referral reward not arrived?
The qualifying action may be incomplete, payment may not have cleared, delivery may not have occurred, or a verification or returns period may be running. Check the stated timetable, retain evidence and contact official support only after that period has passed.
Is it safe to buy a referral code online?
Treat it as high risk. Genuine referrals are normally shared through the provider’s programme, not sold for a bank transfer, login or personal data. Payment may leave you without a benefit and could breach the programme rules.
What if a code was accepted but I was charged full price?
Check the order confirmation and saved terms. The benefit may be a later credit, or an exclusion may have blocked an immediate discount. If checkout promised a discount that was not applied, contact the retailer through its official support route with the order reference and evidence. This is general information, not personal advice.
