British Airways says tier points move members through Blue, Bronze, Silver and Gold, unlocking benefits such as priority check-in and lounge access. For paid flights, do not assume that a longer journey always earns more. British Airways states that its earnings treatment for British Airways, American Airlines and Iberia can depend on spend in the cases it describes, while some partner earning is based on distance. How Reward Flights work — and why the cash charge matters
A Reward Flight is not normally a free ticket. You pay with Avios plus cash for taxes, fees and carrier charges. The Avios total and cash charge shown in search depend on the itinerary, date, class and payment option. 5
British Airways publishes fixed-cash Reward Flight options for eligible British Airways flights, subject to the route and conditions. Partner rewards work differently: British Airways says the cash amount on partner itineraries is variable. The booking journey may show several Avios & Money combinations. Fewer Avios normally means more cash, while more Avios means less cash. Compare the incremental cash saving against the extra Avios required, rather than assuming the lowest cash payment is best. Peak and off-peak dates can also alter the Avios price, including within a return itinerary. 8
Check the current change and cancellation conditions before payment. British Airways says changes and cancellations are normally subject to availability and a service fee, and cancellation must be made at least 24 hours before the first flight to be eligible for a refund. Availability is the central constraint, especially during school holidays, in premium cabins or when several people need to travel together. British Airways says it guarantees a minimum number of reward seats on its own flights to and from London Heathrow and Gatwick: eight in economy, two in premium economy and four in business. London City has a different stated minimum. This is not a promise that seats will remain on every date, route or cabin, and it is not a published guarantee for partner flights. 8

Partner airlines: broader reach, different economics
Where reward availability exists, Avios can be used with Iberia, American Airlines, oneworld airlines and other partners, opening destinations beyond British Airways’ own network. 8
The trade-off is variation. Not every paid partner fare earns Avios or tier points. Not every partner seat is released as a reward. Partner cash charges are variable. Check the marketing and operating carrier, fare class, baggage allowance, connection airport and any separate positioning flight from the UK. Household Accounts: pool towards a shared goal
A British Airways Club Household Account can pool Avios for up to six people, including children. Each person still earns tier points and progresses through the Club tiers individually. When Avios are spent, British Airways says it deducts a proportional amount from each member’s balance. 2
A Household Account is not casual point sharing. The household head manages member changes. Members cannot ordinarily redeem outside the household, though a separate family-and-friends list can permit redemption for up to five nominated people. It is most useful for a genuine household with a shared travel aim and a clear agreement about who will travel. It is less suitable if each person expects unrestricted access to their entire individual balance at any moment.
Avios expiry: keep your balance active
British Airways says your Avios remain active if you collect, spend, buy or share at least one Avios every 36 months. If there is no qualifying activity for three years, the Avios expire and are removed. 2
Set a reminder well before the deadline. A small, genuine eligible activity is preferable to waiting until the final day, but do not buy something you do not need simply to protect points. How to calculate whether a redemption is worthwhile
A transparent comparison removes the cash you still need to pay:

This figure applies only to that comparison. Use the price of a cash ticket you would really purchase, not an unusually expensive fare you would never choose. Compare like for like on travel date, cabin, baggage, extras and flexibility. A refundable cash fare or a lower sale fare changes the result.
A sensible first Avios plan
Open or verify your free British Airways Club account, add its number to eligible bookings and set one attainable trip goal. Collect through normal travel and spending, check reward availability before committing to a destination, and retain some flexibility.
Avoid both extremes: hoarding indefinitely for a theoretical premium redemption, and spending Avios at the first opportunity without a cash comparison. A successful redemption is one that makes a planned journey work at a total cost you think is sensible.
