Commercial disclosure: Refer & Save may earn commission when readers use clearly identified compensated links and complete a qualifying action. Check the provider’s current terms before acting.
Referral Code Not Working What to Check
When a referral code does not work, stop before creating another account or repeating a payment. Check the exact code, referral route, customer eligibility, product, country, deadline and qualifying action. Save the error message and contact the provider if the referral cannot be confirmed before you commit money or complete an irreversible step.
The right fix depends on where the process failed. A code rejected at checkout is different from a referral that was recorded but has not yet produced a reward.
Identify what has gone wrong
Choose the description that best matches your situation:
| Problem | What it usually means | Start with |
|---|---|---|
| The code field says invalid or expired | The code, campaign, product or date may be wrong | Check code entry, current status, region and product |
| There is no place to enter a code | The programme may require a referral link or app invitation | Reopen the provider's official referral instructions |
| The referral link does not open | The URL may be incomplete, withdrawn or blocked | Verify the destination independently and ask for a fresh official link |
| The link opens but shows no referral message | Tracking may be automatic, unavailable or lost | Check the provider's stated confirmation method before registering |
| The code was accepted but no benefit appears | The benefit may be paid later rather than at checkout | Read the reward trigger and payment window |
| The account is open but the referral is missing | The route may not have attached or eligibility is unresolved | Preserve evidence and contact the provider before repeating actions |
| The qualifying action is complete but no reward has arrived | This is usually a reward-status issue | Use the Referral Reward Not Received guide |
Do not create another account immediately
Creating a second account can make the problem worse. Many programmes exclude duplicate accounts, repeat customers, multiple identities or more than one account per person or household.
Do not change your email address, device, phone number or identity merely to appear new. Do not repeat a purchase, deposit, transfer or investment unless the provider confirms that the first action did not qualify and that another attempt is appropriate.
If you have not completed registration, pause at the current step. If the account already exists, save the evidence and ask whether the referral can be checked or corrected.
Check the code exactly
Copy the code from the provider-generated referral message or the verified offer page. Check:
Letters that resemble numbers, such as O and 0 or I and 1.
Hyphens, spaces and punctuation.
Uppercase and lowercase where the form may be case-sensitive.
A person's full name where the programme uses a referral name.
Whether the code belongs in a referral field rather than a general promo-code box.
Whether an old code has been replaced by a new campaign code.
Paste the code once, remove any accidental spaces at the beginning or end and check the message shown by the form. Do not cycle through unrelated codes. Repeated attempts can trigger security or promotion controls without solving the underlying problem.
Confirm whether the programme uses a link instead
Some programmes have no visible code field because the referral identifier is embedded in the link. Opening the link before account creation can be essential.
Check the provider's instructions for the correct order. A typical link-based route is:
- Open the referral link.
- Confirm that the destination belongs to the genuine provider.
- Select the eligible product from that route.
- Register without leaving for another promotion or comparison route.
- Complete the qualifying action within the stated period.
Do not assume that copying the landing-page URL into another browser preserves the referral. Some identifiers are stored in the full URL, a session or an app handoff. Use the original official referral route where possible.
Check new-customer eligibility
A code can be valid while the person using it is ineligible. Review whether you have previously:
Opened or started an account with the provider.
Used a free trial.
Held another product within the same group.
Closed an account and returned.
Received another welcome or referral offer.
Registered through an app store before opening the referral route.
Also check age, UK residency, address, household, payment method and product restrictions. If the programme does not define an edge case, ask the provider rather than guessing.
Check the country and product
A code may work only for a particular country, app, website, account type, tariff, plan or product. A UK referral might not work on the provider's international site. A personal-account referral might not apply to a business account. A referral for a specific subscription tier may not work on a free or premium plan.
Confirm:
You are on the UK provider domain or correct app.
The advertised product is still eligible.
The selected plan matches the referral terms.
The currency and customer location are permitted.
You have not reached the page through a different regional campaign.
Check the dates and time limits
There can be more than one relevant deadline:
The date by which the new customer must register.
The date by which the qualifying purchase or transaction must complete.
A period measured from opening the account or clicking the link.
A later validation or reward-payment period.
A transaction made before a deadline may settle afterwards. Whether it counts depends on the wording. Check whether the provider refers to made, completed, settled, cleared or delivered transactions.
Do not rely on a search-result date or an old social post. Use the current programme terms and record the time at which you checked them.
Check the qualifying action
Registration alone often does not trigger a reward. The programme may require:
A first paid order above a minimum amount.
A card transaction that has settled rather than remained pending.
A subscription payment after a trial.
A deposit maintained for a stated period.
An approved application followed by a transaction.
Identity or account verification.
Delivery without cancellation or return.
A specific product or payment method.
Read the requirement literally. A bank transfer may not count as a card purchase. A cash withdrawal may be excluded. A refunded order may remove the reward. Fees, gift cards, taxes or delivery charges might not count towards minimum spend.
Do not spend more merely to force a referral to qualify. If the required product or action is unsuitable, leave the reward rather than creating a larger cost or risk.
Check for another promotion or tracking route
A cashback website, voucher code, browser extension, comparison link or another person's referral can compete for attribution. Some providers allow combinations; others do not.
Do not assume that clearing cookies, using private browsing, changing devices or disabling security settings will fix the problem. Those steps can remove evidence, lose the referral session or conflict with the provider's process. Follow only troubleshooting steps published by the provider or given by its official support team.
If you used another promotional route, tell support exactly what happened and provide the order of events.
Check the referrer's eligibility
The new customer may be eligible while the referrer is not. The referrer might have reached a programme cap, closed the account, breached a sharing rule or used an expired invitation.
Ask the referrer to generate a fresh link from the official app or account area. Do not ask them to send account screenshots containing personal information. If a fresh provider-generated link also fails, contact the provider.
Check whether the code was recorded successfully
Look for a confirmation in the provider's page, app, email or account area. The wording may say referred, invited, promotion applied, discount applied or reward pending.
An accepted code does not always produce an immediate price reduction. The reward might be issued only after delivery, payment clearance, a returns period or a later qualifying action.
If no confirmation appears, save screenshots of:
The offer and significant conditions.
The complete referral link or code.
The page before submission.
The error or absence of confirmation.
The date and time.
The order or application reference, with sensitive details concealed where appropriate.
What to do at each failure point
The code is rejected before registration
Check the code, product, UK route, campaign status and eligibility. If those appear correct, stop and contact the provider before opening the account. Ask whether the programme is live and whether the code is valid for the selected product.
The referral link is broken
Do not enter details into a lookalike page. Open the provider independently and find its referral help page. Ask the referrer for a new link generated from the official account area. Report the broken destination to ReferAndSave so the listing can be reviewed.
The account has already been created
Do not delete it or make a second account without instruction. Contact the provider promptly, explain that you intended to use the referral and provide the code, link, sign-up time and evidence. Ask whether the referral can be confirmed or added. Some providers permit corrections; others do not.
The code was accepted but checkout did not change
Check whether the benefit is a later reward rather than an immediate discount. Review the order summary, confirmation email and reward timetable. If the offer promised an immediate reduction and the total did not change, pause before paying where possible.
The qualifying action is complete
Check whether the transaction has settled and whether a cancellation or validation period remains. If the stated reward window has passed, move to Referral Reward Not Received.
Evidence to keep
Keep enough information for the provider to locate the journey without sending unnecessary personal data:
Referral code or link.
Offer title and significant conditions.
Date and time of the click, registration and qualifying action.
Account email or customer reference used with the provider.
Order or transaction reference.
Confirmation email or app message.
Screenshot of the error.
The referrer's identifier where the programme requires it.
Never send a password, full card number, one-time passcode or security answer. Use the provider's official support channel rather than sending account evidence to the referrer.
Message to provider support
Copy and personalise this message:
"Hello. I attempted to join through your referral programme on [date and time] using [code or referral link]. I selected [product] and used the account email or reference [reference]. At [stage], I saw [exact error or missing confirmation]. I have not created another account or repeated the qualifying payment. Please confirm whether the referral was recorded, whether I meet the current eligibility rules and what action, if any, I should take next. I can provide the offer screenshot, confirmation and relevant transaction reference through your secure channel."
Keep the provider's reply and any case number.
Report an incorrect ReferAndSave listing
If the code, link or conditions on ReferAndSave appear wrong, use the site's contact or correction route. Include the page URL, what failed, the date, the provider's response and a non-sensitive screenshot where useful.
ReferAndSave should mark the offer for manual review. It should not automatically declare the programme ended solely because one attempt failed, and it should not keep a verified badge when the current claim cannot be confirmed.
Frequently asked questions
Why does the code say invalid
The code may be mistyped, expired, restricted to another product or region, or replaced by a referral link. The code can also be valid while your account is ineligible.
Should I use a different email address
Not to bypass new-customer rules. Use your genuine details and ask the provider whether an earlier account or application affects eligibility.
Should I clear cookies or use incognito mode
Only if the provider's official instructions specifically recommend it. Changing the browsing session can remove referral tracking and evidence.
Can support add a referral code afterwards
Sometimes, but this is provider-specific. Contact support promptly with the referral details and sign-up evidence. Do not promise that a retrospective correction will be accepted.
Why did the code work for somebody else
Eligibility, product selection, country, campaign dates, referral caps and previous account history can differ. Another person's success does not prove that every account qualifies.
The code was accepted but the reward is missing
Acceptance may only record the referral. Check the qualifying action and payment window, then use the Referral Reward Not Received guide.
Can I try several codes
Do not cycle through multiple people's codes. Most programmes attribute one referral to one referrer, and repeated attempts can create conflicting records.
